Former Canadian Military Base in Lahr, Germany (Part 1)

This post and my next will be about the former Canadian military facilities here in Lahr.  I shall then be spending the next couple of months in Nova Scotia, Canada.  My blogs from there will showcase some of the food, events and picturesque towns in that part of the world.  In October, I shall be back in Germany writing once again about the food, wine, beer and culture here.

The Flugplatz (Airfield)

Below, two views of the present main entrance to the airfield

The Royal Canadian Air Force's No. 1 Fighter Wing in Marville, France moved to Lahr, Germany in 1967.  That included 439 and 441 Squadrons.  France had opted out of NATO and required all NATO bases in that country to close.  Later, a squadron from #3 Wing, Zweibrucken, Germany, moved to Lahr.  In about 1971, those squadrons moved to the RCAF's No. 4 Fighter Wing in Baden-Söllingen, Germany, about 45 minutes north of Lahr.

That left only 5 Air Movements Unit using the Lahr airfield regularly, moving military members, families, civilian personnel and equipment between Canada and Germany in Boeing 707 and Hercules aircraft.  Later, a small detachment from 412 Transport Squadron in Canada arrived at 5 AMU.  The two pilots flew smaller planes--the Cosmo and then the Dash 7 and 8--regularly between Germany and London, England.

Below, the 5 AMU as it is today; on the right, the door in front facing the main road.

Below, the former Canadian Forces Base Lahr Headquarters building on the airfield.

In 1970, the Canadian Army and Brigade moved to Lahr from several bases in northern Germany.  The Brigade included 122eR, RCR, 4 Service Battalion and 1RCHA.  The 444 Helicopter Squadron also was part of the Army Brigade in Lahr.  The PPCLI were based in Baden-Söllingen.

Following are some of the buildings still remaining beyond the airfield

Both the Air Force and the Army had a large medical corps, with the Field Ambulance coming down from the north with the Army.  Canadians over the next years had their own hospital with family physicians and specialists, a pharmacy, military postal unit, bank, supermarket, base exchange (Canex), library, schools, a teen centre, swimming pool and gymnasium and various other units and clubs.

The following are pictures of buildings still remaining on the base and pictures of where some of them used to be.

On the left, the picture shows approximately where the "old"  hospital was located (a new one was built near the Kaserne, opening in 1991).  In its place is a huge furniture store, one that was previously in Schuttern.  The picture on the right is a restaurant across the street from where the hospital was located.

Below, the Euro Inn, a hotel with reasonable rates on the same side of the street as the former hospital.  It had been newly built by the Canadian military as a barracks for single service men and women.

Below, a group of restaurants where the Junior Ranks Mess Hall was located. A restaurant
is part of the old Mess Hall still today.

The following are buildings that remain and are still being used.

Below, the former military Roman Catholic church; on the right, Canex and snack bar building

Below left, renovated barracks; below right, the building just past the AMU, where Legion #4 has their meeting place.

Below left, a bldg just past the AMU; it houses a flying school.  Below right, bldg # 22.

Life as we knew it for Canadians in Lahr ended in 1994 when Canadian Forces Base Lahr closed officially.  Canadian Forces Europe Headquarters and Canadian Forces Hospital Europe closed officially in summer 1993, with the Brigade returning to Canada that same year.  Many changes have taken place at the former Canadian and NATO airfield and base, though much from that past era is still evident.

Those intervening 27 years--1967 to 1994--were enjoyed and appreciated and are still remembered by nearly all Canadians who served here and by the many families who visited.  I took these pictures on 10 July 2010.  The temperature was 35.5C, a very hot day!  It reminded me of those earlier sweltering days when a stand-down was called.  The base was then closed for the day except for those services that could not be spared.  Many of the hospital personnel and those at other units were deemed necessary, as any military base must be on watch at all times.

Quite a number of buildings on the Flugplatz (airfield) have been torn down, including the following:  arena, curling rink, gas station, the hospital and the yellow tunnel.  In some instances, grassy areas are the result.  In others, new buildings have emerged.   Although several of the old barracks have been torn down, others have been renovated and are occupied by small businesses.  A new building is being constructed near the  Centennial Club. The former Rod and Gun Club is still in operation, under new owners or tenants, as a private hunting club.  The Senior NCO Mess and the buildings in that area have been sealed off for many years.  They remain standing at this time.

Below left, new construction is going on with what I think is part of what was the Centennial Club in the background.  At right, a new building near the entrance to the former base.

Below left, the gymnasium with pool facilities (no longer used).  Below right, the abandoned tennis courts.

Below, the site where the gas pumps were located

The 5 AMU building and its airfield became a private terminal and airport.  Although one plane was on the tarmac on 10 July, the airfield is used very little.  It was for a time quite active.  A flying school is situated there.

Below centre, a lonely aircraft on the tarmac.  Below left, a picture of the airfield today.  On the right, the stairway to the top floor offices of the 5 AMU building are still standing.   At the very bottom, centre, one of the last major construction projects by the Canadian military.  It is located facing the main road to the base and it is now up for sale.

My next blog will have pictures of the  Kaserne, the "new" Canadian Forces Hospital Europe and some of the PMQs in the city of Lahr.  To see any of the above pictures in a larger format, just click on them.  To return to the blog, click on the arrow at the top left corner of the screen.

  2. Hi there,

So I was born in Lahr in 1986, and I was wondering if you had any pictures of the hospitals back then... I went in 2000 and everything had been torn down by then, kind of sad.

Thank you for all the info!

  4. My parents were in Germany twice in the 50's for 3 years both times before I was born, my sister was born over there and buried... I think I read a blog you did about a Memorial to the children that died in the 50's and onward, can you give me a link to it please? I would like to reread it. Thank you. The pictures are great. I was in the OLD Lahr hospital in the early 60's for a few weeks, on my parents 3rd stationing over there but in Metz, France the last time.

  5. Hi I was in school at the base from 1973-1977 and swam at the base pool. Do you have any info or pictures of the buildings that may still remain. We lived in Kippenheimwiller in the apartment complex too, do you know if they are still there?

    Thanks

    1. Michelle, I was a teacher at Lahr Westend from 73 to 77. I doubt we knew each other but I am looking for Bill and Sandy Atkinson. Their children were Peter, Cindy and Andrew. Peter and Cindy were in high school and Andrew in elementary school so I am wondering if you might have known one of them and kept in touch.

  6. I was 10 when my Dad was stationed there. He played for the Lahr Aces hockey team. I have great memories of Lahr, Germany from 1969 to 1973. It was the best. Living so close to the Black Forest and all the travelling we did when we were there. Life was great back then and it still is today.

  9. Hello Janet,

In 1967, Bernhard Dawson married a Dutch girl by the name of Gezina Zoutman, they went to live at the Gissenstrasse 8, Kubach.
Do you know these people? He was based in Lahr with the RCAF.
I would dearly like to know what happened to them, after they left Germany for Canada.

    1. Hello,
I was posted there 75-79 as an RCD, I visited the old base in 2007, not much to see, the hanger road where the 707s landed are pretty much dilapidated, smashed windows , weeds growing all over the place , the once main gate has a Mig 15 placed alongside a CF104, which seemed ironic given why we were there in the first place, some of the barracks have been utilized , the rest are gone , most of the Kaki green paint on the building s has been repainted, the road going to the north Marg, stops at the Langanwinkle gate, and of course its pretty much deserted, nothing like it was ,……………
The Caserne was a sadder story, totally , deserted, smashed windows , other than one building being used by the entrance, sad to see .
The surrounding areas Mahlberg and the road going to it seems to have sprouted new industry and buildings, the town of Lahr seems dirty, lost its pride of ownership it seems, lots of Eastern Bloc, inhabitants now , I actually went to Niedlershafhiem to seek accommodation felt safer, had reservations about leaving my nice Alfa Ramao rental car out in the open for the night.
Of course Triberg, Friberg and other surrounding Black forest towns , had flourished of at least stayed the same, the prices seem to have remarkably stayed low given the time lapse, sad to see the base the way it was but nice to see all the same , better enjoyed seeing the surrounding areas.
I flew in from Gatwick to Strasbourg, rented a car from the airport, went up to Heidelberg drove down to Innsbruck , went to Vipitino for Pizza, then drove back through the Black forest, a great Trip.
      Tony.

  15. Thank you Janet for all these pictures.

As a reservist, I staid only 6 months in Lahr (Apr to Sept 1992), but those were 6 GREAT months !

I worked at Comm Squadron, message center. The building seems to be still there when I look at Google Earth. My barrack was what is now called Euro Inn. We were not too far from the cinema, the Harvey's
    and the coffee shop.

C'est un peu triste de voir que les Allemands ont laissé partiellement à l'abandon notre ancienne base. Je crois que la dernière photo (en bas au centre) était l'édifice du 4th Canadian Air Defense Regiment.

During the 6 months I was in Lahr, 4 different units closed down. It was very sad to see all this happening.

    Thanks again ! Merci !

  18. Could anyone tell me if there were families living 'on' the Lahr Base? My understanding was that the men went to the base in the morning but the families lived in the nearby town(s).
Also if you have an official site to this information it would be appreciated if you could pass that on.

  19. Jannette,

There were no families living on the base itself, only some single people living in the Single Quarters. Most married couples were living either on the economy, (German Housing) or in the PMQs in different areas i.e. Area, 31, 32, etc...

  25. Wow - amazing pictures and memories. My husband & I were one of the first Canadian families to be there in Lahr and lived in the campsite for 5 months waiting for our PMQ. (One of the Towers in area 31). We went back to visit a few years ago and couldn't believe the changes. My friend & I were the ones who wrote "The Euroquiz" in the local Arrowhead newspaper and had lots of fun scouting out clues every week. Our son, Steve, was also born there in the hospital on the base and now he is stationed in London! Time goes so fast doesn't it!!

  26. I was in Metz, France 1965/66 and 1966/67 and moved to Lahr in 1967/68, 1968/69. I lived in Sulz in the Black Forest the first year and for the second moved onto Kaiserstrasse in Lahr, close to the beautiful Swimmbad. Made the best friends of my life there and fondly remember "Teen Town' and the Caserne. These few short years affected my life and my friends life there as much as a serviceman's experience in WW11, they remain ingrained in us and are unforgettable. I wish I had the resources to take my sons to live abroad as I did, it is the best experience and education one can have. Anyone in Lahr from 67 to 69, please contact me....Jane Buxton. 1. Hello! I worked briefly on the base in 1969 when I was nineteen years old. I was backpacking around Europe and ended up in Lahr in May of 1969 and was hired as a labourer and worked for a Master Sergeant McDonald; a great guy.
I worked with other civilians; both German and French civilians. We were building shelving out of Dexion in a large quonset warehouse.
The shelving was to store aircraft tires for RCAF CF-104 Starfighters and USAF McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II's.
I also worked receiving and warehousing large aluminum containers full of materiel that had been shipped from RCAF Station Zweibrücken which finally closed on 27 August 1969.
I stayed at Walter and Mary Schottmueller's Gasthaus Zur GutenKell(?) aka "Walter's Canadian Spring". It was the first bar on the road in to Lahr so lots of CDN airmen stopped there for "the first one after work".
They were great people; my buddy and I helped them in their large garden and small orchard behind their hotel.
After long day working on base, Mary fed these 2 young hungry Canucks unbelievably good homemade goulash with home made noodles cut right from the cutting board into the boiling water. Mary also made the very best schnitzels, sausages, sauerkraut, etc. that I had ever eaten in my life. Their son Walter junior "worked" in the bar but only when it was convenient for him to do so!
Walter senior was a great guy. He had been drafted into the Hitler youth later in the war and was nearly cut in halfo by an Italian machine gunner. Walter had a very peculiar "Texas twang" to his German accented English. He explained that he had learned English from American doctors and nurses in the US field hospital where they had saved his life and treated his wounds after being shot by the Italians. I had a German girlfriend who was an art and music student at a college near Lahr. She was a great girl, played some mean classical guitar.
Left for Sweden in early July and never made it back to Lahr, but have often thought of this short period of my life.

I have a few memories of Lahr including the "Stork Tower" restaurant and the park not far from our PMQ's. We lived in apartment like buildings that I believe were 3 stories high with 6 apartments. There were 2 of them with a set of monkey bars in between. I also went to school there and I remember my teacher "Miss Smith" who used to play the guitar. Our neighbors at the time were the ROSS PUGH family, they had 2 daughters named Audrey and Joanne. I would love to hear from anyone else who's folks were stationed there around that time. My name is Bonnie.

    1. Hi. I lived in the PMQ's (apartment buildings until November 1972. Street name was Im Glockenguppen (I think the spelling is close). The addresses were Area _, Building _, Apartment_. Across the street were "round" apartment buildings. I have a plaque with pic of the round apartment buildings. I was 8 when we left. My father was Harry ("Sonny") Peddle. My school was Gutenburg School. My name is Darlene. I do remember a few of my classmates..Linda Berry, Brett Gilcrest. Some great memories of that area. :) My email is darleneoliver2@gmail.com

  43. Hi my name is Nadine and my father is Ross Ennis. I was born in Lahr Germany in 1968 on the base, apparently I was the first baby girl born. 2 years ago I was lucky enough to travel back there to see Lahr as I don't remember as much as my big brother Doug. Ive recently been looking in to family history, did anyone know my dad Ross Ennis or know what he did ? I do know we lived in Wallburg. My email is: tesshall@mts.net Thank you, Nadine

  44. Hi all,
Curious, the kids born at Lahr was it on base or off? Wondering about if we'd qualify for A German passport.
